I lead the US Expansion group and the London office at the Silicon Valley-headquartered law firm Wilson Sonsini. I work with venture-backed UK/EU tech companies through their US life cycle – US launch, expansion, later-stage fundraising, commercial partnerships, M&A and IPO – and also facilitate access to a wide-ranging transatlantic network of investors, corporates, and advisors.
But really, I’m just a kid from the NYC suburbs who caught the transatlantic travel bug after backpacking across Europe with a Eurorail pass after university (and, like many Americans who take similar trips, ended up only meeting other Americans with Eurorail passes). After subsequently going to law school and becoming a tech lawyer, in early 2011 I attended a fateful meeting with representatives of the UK Department for International Trade at the British Consulate in NYC. They told me all about the UK Government’s new “Tech City” initiative to scale the UK digital economy. As they noted: historically, they had typically supported US tech companies expanding to the UK; if the Tech City initiative was successful, however, there would be a substantial need to support UK tech companies looking to scale, raise money, and list or sell, in the US. Is that something I could help with, they asked, and if so – could I do it in London?
After logging a million miles in the air and opening a London office on the ground, and after learning how to speak a different language despite remaining monolingual, every day I now have the privilege of helping some of the most exciting companies in the UK and Europe scale in America, raise money on Sand Hill Road, list on NASDAQ, and compete and win on the global stage. Hopefully my own transatlantic expansion experience allows me to provide insight, network, and encouragement, and perhaps a bit of empathy too.
