LinkedIn is a tool that I have open every day of my life, I use the mobile app several times per day too. A debate this week crystallised just why:
We were having a great debate at Notion as I approach my 2000th connection on LinkedIn, namely "what is the 1 in 2000 connection you would most wish to connect with next?" or put another way - which person will have the biggest impact on your fortunes moving forward?
WHITEBOARD!
I love these games and we covered lots of scenarios but I settled on three types of “rock my world” stars:
The obvious one – that top founder who’s found a massive pain in a big market and executes like stink; like Charlie Osmond of www.triptease.com.
The less obvious one – the super-smart conduit who is all over start ups & brings me the opportunity; like Charlie who was introduced to me by Damian Kimmelman the great founder of www.duedil.com, who I was introduced to by Rory Stirling the investor @bgfventures, who intro'd me to Charlie – it just goes on & on & on…
The critical one – the grow up or scale up exec who enables the founders and team to exploit the opportunity. Gold dust. Like Jonny Gale who helped transform MessageLabs and then went into Mimecast where there's another grow up guy Keith Wallington (who talks to founders about adding grow ups with our Strategic Partners like Kommol) and just to prove the point, post Mimecast Jonny became the CEO of www.newvoicemedia.com in 2011 to enable it to grow up and scale up which has been transformational in so many ways.
So my life revolves around all three. Finding them, nurturing them, doing deals with them and building and sharing lots of campfire stories. Some good, some bad and some moments that give you that buzz which last a lifetime. I have a segmented list of 100 people who are most likely to Rock my world and the world around me.
