Jonathan Groves General Counsel
I first joined Notion on secondment in summer 2019, and straight away was struck by the special culture the team have built over the past 10 years. I loved working as part of the Notion family with our brilliantly fun and talented team in a driven and meritocratic environment.
In line with our guiding principles, my secondment involved a tremendous mix of hard work and good fun. I helped manage a number of exciting investments for the fund and also ended up on stage, playing the drums, at our annual founders’ retreat! I joined Notion fulltime soon after my secondment finished (in Jan 2020) and it is an absolute pleasure to continue to be a part of the Notion family. My role in the team is to advise on our investments and exits (working closely with our trusted external law firms). I also help support our portfolio companies to navigate complex legal issues. I’m passionate about the work and love collaborating with our immensely talented founders to help solve problems and drive success in our portfolio.
My background, growing up in rural Tanzania, taught me how to be creative, resourceful and relentless and these character traits and early experiences have helped me immensely throughout my legal career. Before Notion, I qualified and worked as a solicitor at Macfarlanes in the corporate tax group before joining Ashfords’ corporate team. My experiences at Ashfords’, working closely with a number of market-leading UK and international investment funds and growth companies on a wide range of equity fundraising transactions, have given me a unique insight into the VC market and fundraisings more generally.
It is an exceptionally exciting time for European SaaS (and enterprise tech more generally) and I’m grateful to have the opportunity at Notion to work with our groundbreaking portfolio companies to help deliver extraordinary success!
